General Care for French Bulldogs
Learn essential French Bulldog care tips, including grooming, exercise, safety, and health advice to keep your Frenchie happy and healthy.
French Bulldogs are relatively low-maintenance dogs and adapt well to smaller living spaces. They are generally quiet and affectionate, though individual personalities can vary, especially around other pets.
These dogs should never be allowed to roam freely. Outdoor time should always be supervised, either in a secure, fenced yard or on a leash. Because Frenchies are poor swimmers due to their front-heavy build, they must never be left unattended near water.
French Bulldogs are sensitive to temperature extremes. They do best in moderate climates and should be closely monitored in both hot and cold weather. Signs like excessive panting or shivering indicate the dog is too hot or cold. In warm or humid environments (around 70°F and above), it’s important to provide air conditioning indoors and in vehicles.
These dogs have powerful jaws, so durable, indestructible toys are recommended. Avoid rawhide chews, as they can soften and become a choking hazard.
Grooming and Hygiene
Coat care: Occasional brushing keeps the coat healthy and shiny.
Nail trimming: Regular trimming is necessary, since Frenchies often don’t wear their nails down naturally.
Facial folds & ears: Clean the deep facial folds and ears regularly to prevent irritation and infection.
Anal sacs: Routine checks help prevent discomfort or complications.
Your veterinarian can provide guidance on proper cleaning techniques, weight management, and feeding. Maintaining a healthy weight is especially important, as obesity increases the risk of many breed-specific health problems.
